"If This Potato Could Talk"
The Baked Potato Jazz Club
Where do celebrities, locals and international
visitors go to experience the world's best live Jazz while enjoying
a delicious stuffed baked potato? Only one place has it all
the
Baked Potato Jazz club in Southern California. This proposed documentary
film project would chronicle all the history, the wonderful Jazz performances,
celebrity sightings, baked potatoes and much more.
For over 30 years the Baked Potato
in North Hollywood, California, has provided live Jazz seven nights
a week. Since 1970, the club, operated by musician and composer Don
Randi, has become a Los Angeles icon and is recognized internationally,
promoting a true American art form, Jazz.
From the beginning, on any given night,
you'll see some of the music industry's top Jazz performers and studio
musicians playing in the intimate setting which is the Baked Potato.
The "Spud," as regulars call it, is an important outlet
for musicians from all over the world to perform the many varieties
of Jazz. The Baked Potato has been labeled the 'petri dish' of the
Los Angeles Jazz scene because of the diversity of Jazz styles that
can be heard there. The Spud has been a launch pad for the successful
careers of numerous Jazz musicians such as Al Jarreau, Kenny G, Larry
Carlton, Tom Scott, Lee Ritenour and many more.
Many of Hollywood's most recognizable
celebrities are regulars at the Baked Potato and make it their place
for live Jazz entertainment. Clint Eastwood, Robert De Niro, Nancy
Sinatra, Andy Garcia, Lucy Liu and Geoffrey Rush, just to name a few,
have all been spotted hanging out at the Spud. Many enjoy a tasty
15-20 ounce potato along with their live entertainment. The club's
menu boasts a huge selection of baked potatoes with fixings!
The Baked Potato, however, is not just
a Jazz club. It is also an exceptionally large extended family and
continues to be the place where Jazz fans and musicians gather, share
stories and exchange licks. For many, especially for L.A. locals,
the Baked Potato offers their first experience of live Jazz.
As musicians and filmmakers, it is
our objective, obligation and privilege, to bring the Baked Potato
to audiences world wide in a documentary film, drawing attention to
it's ever evolving and incredible history. Utilizing photographs,
video, candid interviews and incredible live performances, we will
document the real life stories, the anecdotes and the emotions conveyed
by the wonderful musicians, artists and fans who have experienced
the Baked Potato first hand.
We invite you to join us in preserving
the Baked Potato on film for an audience of millions who are "hungry"
for great entertainment that could only come from an artistic landmark
like the Spud!
